The Challenge: Reviving a Craftsman Home Interior

The homeowners approached Decorilla seeking creative direction for their Craftsman interior. The structure had strong architectural bones but lacked cohesion—its mix of mid-market furniture and mismatched lighting left the home visually scattered and functionally underpowered.

Their goals were clear:

  • Unify the main floor while honoring original Craftsman details
  • Replace all furniture except the piano and TV
  • Introduce color through textiles, wall treatments, and artwork
  • Improve lighting across the home
  • Select durable, pet- and teen-friendly materials
  • Reduce visual clutter without sacrificing personality
  • Integrate existing art selectively and thoughtfully

They needed a design that felt collected, expressive, and capable of holding up to everyday life.

Design Inspiration: A Modern Interpretation of Craftsman Style

The clients gravitated toward interiors that felt lived-in, expressive, and full of character. They consistently bookmarked rooms that blended traditional elements with fresh, eclectic energy. Rather than minimalism, they craved a home that could absorb daily life—family, pets, guests—without feeling overwhelmed.

Their inspiration gallery included:

  • Classic Craftsman woodwork
  • Rich, layered textures
  • Flexible layouts that prioritize comfort
  • A blend of new and old design details
  • Spaces built for long-term use and natural aging

This set the tone for a design that captured both permanence and personality.

Initial Concepts: Two Distinct Visions

After reviewing the brief, Decorilla paired the clients with two designers—Erin R. and Jillian M.—each offering a unique interpretation of modern Craftsman decor.

Erin R.’s Concept

Erin proposed a soft, classic approach. Her moodboard highlighted:

  • Ivory-toned upholstery
  • A vintage-inspired khaki rug
  • Warm wood accents
  • Understated, textural art

Her palette emphasized gentle contrasts and balanced proportions, drawing from traditional Craftsman cues.

Jillian M.’s Concept

Jillian’s proposal leaned into depth, structure, and visual definition:

  • A richer, more saturated color palette
  • Stronger anchors to define zones
  • Thoughtful symmetry without rigidity
  • Durable, tactile materials

Her vision felt instantly usable—inviting, functional, and grounded. The clients connected with her approach and chose to move forward with Jillian’s plan.

The Transformation: A Cohesive, Eclectic Craftsman Home

The completed design answers a common challenge: how to create a home that feels expressive yet composed. Previously disjointed rooms now flow seamlessly, each with clear function, scale, and intention.

Living Room: Balanced, Grounded, and Refined

The redesigned living room achieves clarity through proportion, palette, and material choices. Rather than competing with the architecture, the furnishings work with it:

  • A well-scaled sofa anchors the space
  • The piano retains its place as a focal element
  • Lighting is cohesive and evenly layered
  • A muted, layered palette softens the room’s natural angles

Before, the layout pushed furniture to the walls, compressing the space and disrupting flow.
After, low-profile furnishings and clean sightlines create harmony and improve scale.

Full-length curtains add vertical structure and soften daylight. A subtly patterned rug grounds the room while maintaining calm acoustics and tone.

Dining Room: Geometry, Texture, and Elevated Function

The dining room transformation hinges on a bold yet controlled wall treatment. The designer preserved the original lower paneling and introduced patterned blue-green wallpaper above, giving the room depth without overwhelming it.

Key changes include:

  • A larger, linear dining table that suits the room’s proportions
  • Structured, cohesive dining chairs
  • Full-height curtains installed at ceiling level
  • A streamlined chandelier that complements the room’s geometry
  • An artful arrangement of masks and artwork that respects scale and spacing

A black console provides architectural balance and subtly reinforces the room’s direction.

Family Room + Breakfast Nook: Open, Calm, and Connected

The family room now reads with clarity, thanks to a centered sectional scaled to the width of the room and aligned with the fireplace. The layout preserves views into the breakfast nook and supports circulation throughout the main floor.

Design highlights:

  • Soft, matte wall color that diffuses daylight
  • Simplified TV wall with a grounding wood console
  • Olive-toned accent chairs in harmony with a neutral base palette
  • Dense, floor-length drapery for texture and warmth
  • Lighting elements that echo the home’s existing geometry

Breakfast Nook

A round pedestal table, woven chairs, and a soft rug define an inviting, uncluttered nook. This space functions as a quiet pause—a simple, legible zone that complements the family room without competing with it.

Entryway: A Refined, Functional Welcome

Previously crowded and visually noisy, the entryway is now intentional and aligned with the home’s architecture. A well-proportioned rug sets the axis, while a compact wood-and-iron shoe rack and minimal accessories maintain clarity.

The new light fixture, with wood slats and clean geometry, echoes the Craftsman millwork without mimicking it. Light, color, and proportion guide the transition into the rest of the home.

Powder Room: Small Space, Big Character

The powder room delivers an expressive moment through wall-to-wall botanical wallpaper. Running the pattern from baseboard to ceiling compresses and reframes the room, giving it energy without clutter.

Additional details include:

  • A deep charcoal vanity that stabilizes the design
  • A softly figured stone countertop
  • A simple, proportionate mirror
  • Evenly spaced overhead lighting
  • Neutral artwork placed with ample margin

Although more vivid, the powder room feels consistent with the home’s overall language.

Design Details: Sourcing With Intention

Throughout the remodel, Decorilla’s process brought clarity and efficiency:

  • 3D visualizations helped the clients understand spatial flow
  • Iterative revisions ensured accuracy
  • Access to trade-only vendors kept material quality high
  • A curated shopping list made purchasing seamless and budget-conscious

The result is a home rich in personality and built for longevity—an eclectic Craftsman interior that ages gracefully and lives comfortably.
