When selecting a rug for your home, the size plays a crucial role in enhancing the room’s functionality and aesthetic. Here’s a guide to help you choose the perfect rug for each space.

Living Room

For the living room, a general rule of thumb is to select a rug longer than your sofa to give the room an airy feel and frame the space. In terms of width, the rug should extend under at least one-third of the sofa. If you find that one large rug is not enough, consider using two smaller rugs side by side. This works well if the rugs have a long pile, as the edges will be hidden.

Example:

  • LOHALS Rug (300×200 cm) – Perfect for a 3-seat sofa.

Bedroom

In the bedroom, placing a rug near the bed creates a soft, cozy feel. A larger rug should extend about 50 cm beyond the outer edges of the bed. If you prefer a smaller rug next to the bed, make sure to use an anti-slip underlay to keep it in place.

Example:

  • STOENSE Rug (300×200 cm) – A great match for a queen bed.

Dining Area

A rug in the dining area helps define the space and enhances its visual appeal. For this area, choose a flatwoven rug or one with a very low pile, making it easier to move chairs and clean. The rug should extend at least 60-80 cm beyond the table on all sides to accommodate the chairs, even when pulled out.

Example:

  • TIPHEDE Rug (220×155 cm) – Ideal for a 4-seat dining table.

Hallway

For the hallway, start with a durable door mat just inside the entrance to protect the floor and collect dirt. If space allows, place a larger rug further into the hallway. Make sure the rug is hardwearing due to the high foot traffic in this area. Using an anti-slip underlay like STOPP is highly recommended for safety.

Tip: A runner rug works well for longer hallways, while small rugs can be used for entryways.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right size rug for each room in your home involves considering the function of the space, the size of the furniture, and the overall aesthetic you want to achieve. Make sure to measure your space accurately and don’t hesitate to use multiple smaller rugs to create a larger effect.
