If you have old books gathering dust, don’t let them go to waste! This DIY book flower vase is a stunning way to upcycle paper into a sculptural home decor piece. It is incredibly easy to make, requires no special tools, and takes only a few minutes to complete.

This folded book vase is perfect for displaying dried lavender, faux greenery, or crepe paper flowers. Whether you’re styling a rustic wedding or a “Dark Academia” bookshelf, this craft adds instant character to your space.

🛠️ Tools & Materials

Before you begin, gather these simple supplies:

  • Old Book: Use a thrifted hardcover or an old paperback you’re willing to tear.
  • Double-Sided Tape: Essential for securing the folds.
  • Ruler & Pencil: For precise measurements.
  • Paper Cutter: Ensure it is sharp for clean edges.
  • Cardboard: To protect the pages you aren’t cutting.

📖 Step-by-Step Tutorial

1. Finding the Center

Open the book to its exact middle. Use your ruler to find the center point of the page and draw a light vertical line from top to bottom.

2. Counting Your Pages

Count 12 pages to the left and 12 pages to the right of the center. Mark these spots with a piece of paper or a sticky note. Slide your protective cardboard behind the 12th page to ensure you don’t cut into the rest of the book.

3. Cutting and Ripping

Using your paper cutter and the center line as a guide, cut through the 12 marked pages. Once cut, carefully tear off the top half of those specific pages, leaving the bottom half attached to the spine. For a cleaner look, you can follow iFixit’s guide on precision paper cutting.

4. Gluing and Folding

Take three of your cut pages and tape them together using double-sided tape. Apply more tape to the outer edge of the top page, then fold it inward toward the spine. This creates the “pocket” or “vane” of your vase.

5. Finishing the Shape

Repeat the folding and taping process for the remaining pages until you have a symmetrical, fan-like structure in the center of your book.

✨ Creative Variations for 2026

  • Ombré Pages: Lightly mist the edges of the folded pages with watercolor or tea-stain them for a vintage, aged look.
  • Embellishments: Add lace trim or twine around the “neck” of the vase for a cottagecore aesthetic.
  • Illuminated Vase: Tuck a small strand of battery-operated LED fairy lights between the folds for a magical evening glow.
