What is smart furniture?

Smart furniture is more high-tech than your typical home furnishings because they come with built-in technology to be more functional and convenient. With features that elevate beyond what traditional furniture can do, it aims to improve comfort, efficiency, and connectivity in modern living spaces.

Definition of smart furniture

Most commonly, smart furniture refers to pieces of furniture that incorporate smart technology to enhance functionality and user experience. These technologies often include connectivity features (like bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Matter), sensors, and integrations with other smart devices around your home. In fact, smart furniture is often part of a larger smart home ecosystem, allowing users to control and monitor it via smartphones, voice assistants, and other smart devices. Some smart furniture is even capable of adapting to user needs and automating tasks.

It is worth noting that smart appliances also exist, but just how you wouldn’t classify a regular appliance as furniture, the smart versions are not classified that way either. Furniture typically refers to large movable objects intended to support various human activities, such as seating, eating, or sleeping; Examples include chairs, tables, sofas, and beds. In contrast, appliances serve a different purpose, primarily related to tasks involving cooking, cleaning, or climate control.

Typical features of smart home furniture

Generally, smart furnishings are differentiated from regular furniture because they have some or all of the following features:

  • Charging: USB ports, wireless charging pads, or other ways to charge devices
  • Speakers: Built-in speakers
  • Sensors: Sensors that adjust the furniture or activate features based on movement
  • Connectivity: The ability to connect to a network or bluetooth device
  • Automation: Can be programmed to perform actions automatically based on user preferences

Why choose smart furniture for your home?

As we mentioned earlier, the benefits of smart furniture boil down to improving convenience and comfort for users to make life easier. One such example would be helping to reduce clutter because of integrated technology – instead of having a couch, phone charger, and speaker in your living room, you would just need to have a smart couch because the speakers and charging port are built-in. Some pieces of smart furniture, like coffee tables and desks, also come with wireless charging so any compatible device can be charged without extra wires hanging around.

Smart furniture examples

From the office to the bedroom, there are a lot of options when choosing high tech furniture for your home:

Home office

  • Programmable height-adjustable desks that can be set to particular levels, monitor time spent sitting versus standing, and prompt users to improve their posture
  • Walking desks either have a built-in treadmill or a separate walking pad that allow users to keep active while working

Bathroom

  • Smart faucets activated by touch or with a voice command, often integrated with efficiency monitors to ensure optimal water usage
  • Smart showers provide homeowners enhanced management, allowing for accurate water temperatures, voice commands, and touchscreen interfaces directly in the shower.

Bedroom

  • Intelligent beds equipped with sensors track sleep habits, modify firmness, and control temperature for optimal comfort.
  • Smart bedside tables allow wireless charging or built-in charging ports, light control, and can come with built-in speakers

Living room

  • Smart sofas, couches, and chairs offer living room seating with built-in wireless charging capabilities, USB ports, or speakers
  • Smart tables equipped with integrated touchscreens, wireless charging, or app-controlled lighting

Any room

  • Smart storage cabinets or shelves with automated opening/closing mechanisms and inventory tracking
  • Intelligent mirrors for a vanity, with built-in lighting that adjust based on the time of day or user preferences. Some, like the OMNIA smart mirror unveiled at CES 2025, may even come with speakers and other features like integrated displays or health monitoring
